Ochiai Stone Pavement
Stone Pavement of Ochiai – A Summer Walk
The best time to walk the Ochiai Stone Pavement is in summer. While summer on the trail can be very hot, this stone path offers shade and a naturally cool atmosphere.
A Mountain Road for Travelers
The path between Ochiai-juku and Magome-juku has many slopes. It was built long ago to help travelers and to protect the road from heavy rain. Walking on the stones through the cool, deep forest gives you a sense of the journey travelers once took.

One of Only Two Remaining Stone Pavements in Japan
This cobblestone path has survived from the Edo period. In Japan, only Ochiai and Hakone still have original stone pavements like this. Walking here is a great way to imagine the feelings of travelers from long ago.
Getting There
The Ochiai Stone Pavement is located along the old Nakasendo Trail, which connects Ochiai-juku and Magome-juku.
