Shimazaki Tōson Memorial Museum
Built on the Site of Tōson’s Birthplace
The Shimazaki Tōson Memorial Museum is located in Magome-juku, a historic post town along the Nakasendo. It is built on the site of the birthplace of Shimazaki Tōson (1872–1943), a pioneer of modern Japanese literature. Tōson is famous for novels like Hakai and Yoakemae, which describe the lives of people in modernizing Japan. The museum displays his manuscripts, personal belongings, and materials showing life in Magome during the Meiji period. Even when exhibits are not translated, visitors can feel the era and Tōson’s spirit through his handwriting and the surrounding scenery.
Experience the Views Tōson Loved
In the museum’s Tōson Hall, visitors can quietly enjoy the garden. At its center are the foundation stones of the old honjin, and in front stretches the majestic Mount Ena. Although Tōson’s birthplace was lost in a fire in 1895, the views he cherished are preserved here.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn is highly recommended, when the surrounding mountains and maple trees in the garden turn vibrant red and orange, typically in November. This is a perfect time to experience literature, nature, and history together.
